Abner is lonely. All he wants is to meet a woman who can save him from a life of misery, sexual frustration, and a gruesome day job at the local slaughterhouse. Enrolling in a dating agency seems like the perfect solution, especially when Abner meets Martha, a woman also looking for love. However, it's the beginning of a frightening ordeal when Martha reveals her true colours – she's a witch. Parts is a horror comedy, and one of the few books to feature dating, witchcraft, and a particularly large fly all at the same time.

To say that Parts by Chris Hayward is an unusual book would be the understatement of the year. The fact that it has an interesting protagonist who has an unusual job is what makes it quite different from most books. Abner is in his fifties. Socially-awkward and somewhat of a loner, he’s worked for Skeat’s Meats for the past five years as an abbatoir. He spends his days slaughtering animals and then dealing with the carcasses and their remnants. Hardly the job for everyone and it certainly has it challenges, especially when it comes to personal hygiene and the smells and bits of marrow and carcasses that cling to one’s person at the end of the day. Abner realizes that life is getting away from him and he’s tired of being alone and lonely and wants to share what’s left of his life with a woman but getting one is certainly no easy feat which is why he joins a dating site where he meets Martha, a unique woman in her own right. Parts is very well written. Hayward’s prose is straightforward, unencumbered and Abner’s voice is one of the everyman trying to find his own personal happiness. The author does an excellent job conveying Abner’s loneliness as well as the futility of his life, to some extent. A reader cannot help but feel sorry for his main protagonist because, in some respects, Abner’s plight is very relatable, especially for individuals who are Abner’s vintage who have lost all hope of finding a life partner. Some elements of the story are a little far-fetched yet Parts never attempts to be anything more than it is; an interesting story with a different spin.

Parts edition by Chris Hayward Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

British author Chris Hayward offers no biographical material from which we may glean a concept of his background – so often helpful in reading a book by an author heretofore unknown to us. But it is clear that perhaps his ‘anonymity’ I commensurate with the topic of this book – PARTS – which may or may not be a debut novel.

PARTS is a strange work – a beautifully written and fascinating, very strange work. The title is born out in the chapter headings - tongues, teeth, nipples, knees, eyes, noses, bones, etc – but even that organizational forte defies the origin of this very strange story.

After an opening chapter in which our ‘hero’ Abner shares daydreams and nocturnal dreams of baffling scenes (walking over floors of tongues, male genitalia, etc) we slowly learn more about this strange man, the epitome of many psychosocial ideations and somehow Chris makes us identify with this very odd man. In his synopsis, Chris offers ‘Abner is lonely. Parts is a horror comedy, and one of the few books to feature dating, witchcraft, and a particularly large fly all at the same time.’

Good summary but it doesn’t begin to reveal the strange rake’s progress. Chris’ writing is so strong that it deserves quoting a portion as an aperitif – ‘Conversation had never been one of his strong points, especially when it came to women, and his inspirational idea had been to keep a list of questions and topics of conversation on his person in order to keep everything flowing smoothly. He'd realised this was necessary following his very first date several months ago when, having asked his date's name and manner of employment, he singularly failed to think of anything else to say. As a result, this had led to him answering all of her questions, and as he wasn't very talented at that, he'd quickly found himself staring at the floor with his companion remarking how the evening was one of the worst she'd ever experienced.’ But Abner discovers a possible solution for his dating dilemma in a leaflet - 'Looking for romance? Looking for that perfect partner? Then step into the Dating Mansion and let us do all the hard work for you! Thousands of members ready to meet you now! No hidden charges! Call for your free consultation and find the love you've been looking for! Sound good? It is!'

And it is the incredible horrors of the Dating Mansion that makes this book difficult to categorize – part sexual, part gruesome, part funny, and all highly entertaining. Chris Hayward may be hiding his identity for now, but if he keeps publishing books such as this, he will not remain anonymous for long! Grady Harp, October 15
