Awesome book! I've read all of Mikes books and approaching my fortieth in two years I felt I needed to read this, it didn't disappoint, there was laughs, there was as always with his books things that you thought were going to happen then didn't keeping you interested all the time. I don't read very many books but every time I pick one of mikes books up I know I will want to finish it in one sitting.Product details

Turning Forty Mike Gayle Books Reviews
At least ten years ago I read Turning Thirty by Gayle, I don't remember much about it but I remembered liking it, and other books by Gayle. So I decided to give this one a go. Turns out it is actually a sequel to Thirty, but as I said I don't remember the one and I had no problems following events in Forty. Matt is a guy who just bought a shed, his wife is not as impressed by the fact as he is. It's the catalyst for her to announce their marriage is over, she wants a divorce. Matt had been content with his life and at his high paying computer job which took up a lot of his time, but thought he was having a heart attack one day when boarding a flight to an important meeting. Turns out he was having a panic attack, and it's not the last he will have before he decides he doesn't want to do what he's been doing for a job anymore. He and his soon to be ex wife haven't bothered to move out of their mortgage payment overdue house, but she finally pressures him to do so and tells him she's put it on the market so his hanging around the house isn't a good look. So he goes back to his home town and tells his shocked parents he's staying there for a while. But they, especially his mother aren't that accepting of his new slacker sleep in life, especially since he doesn't seem motivated to go out and get a job. He thought since he's single and all, he'd hook up with Ginny, his old friends with benefits, only it's been about eight years since he saw her. His former best friend who he has seen has told him she's married. So now he wants to avoid her, along with everyone else he went to school with. But it's a small town, and that's not really possible.
It's not a bad book, written in sort of the main character is having a conversation with you style. The characters are rather flawed and the main one is a bit pathetic. It certainly does't seem plausible that the much younger "Elephantdung paper girl" would be interested in him. But overall the novel is a pleasant enough read.
If Turning 30 was good, turning 40 is great.
Gayle never fails to write a page turner
As always with Mike Gayle, an engaging and entertaining read
